Ethiopia’s bold electric leap

In 2024, Ethiopia became the world’s first country to ban imports of petrol and diesel cars, cutting fuel costs and accelerating a nationwide shift to electric mobility. The policy is already reshaping transport across the country.
Electric mobility is gaining momentum across the rest of Africa as well, driven not only by climate objectives, but by energy security, air quality concerns and the high cost of fuel imports. On 30. April 2026, African transport and energy ministers endorsed a Continental Framework on Electric Mobility, signalling a coordinated effort to scale EVs, support local industry and accelerate cleaner transport systems across the continent.
