Norwegians’ appetite for electric cars means that the electric switchover is lightning fast. All the new car brands that have popped up in recent years are electric only, and they are not quite a few.

Now the established car brands are following suit. And it is when the big brands drop fossil fuel that it really flourishes.

More and more fossil models are being phased out of the Norwegian market, despite the fact that several of them still have a large selection of both petrol, diesel and hybrid cars.

“It is very fascinating to observe this technological revolution”, says Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

Citroën, DS, Fiat, Hyundai, Opel, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Lexus are examples of car brands that have dropped all fossil variants as we write 2024, with the exception of some stock cars that may remain.

“This clearly shows how political instruments go straight in and radically affect the business model of the companies”, says Christina Bu.

In total, there are actually 27 car brands that now ONLY sell electric cars in Norway.

If you look at the car brands that, according to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), sold at least one car in the Norwegian market last year, it means that 38 percent of these will only choose to offer all-electric models in 2024.

Admittedly, some of them have very marginal sales, and a couple of the brands on the list below have just established themselves in Norway:

By 2025, zero emissions stand as the target.

In 2016, the Norwegian Parliament committed to the goal that all new cars sold in 2025 should be zero-emission vehicles (fully electric or hydrogen-powered).

“The Norwegian EV Association is confident that Norway can achieve the objective of 100 percent zero-emission car sales in 2025. Electric vehicles (EVs) are not only the top choice in urban areas but also dominate sales in rural regions”, says Bu.

“The Norwegian policy has been tremendously successful, reducing emissions from new passenger cars by over 90 percent. This success has not only influenced and paved the way for other countries but has also extended to various other forms of zero-emission transportation beyond just passenger cars”, Bu adds.
