Sustainable battery production and reuse in a circular economy
Time: May 6, 2026, 15:15-16:00
In cooperation with Battery Norway and Norwegian Rainforest Foundation.
The electric vehicle revolution is accelerating. But while batteries are the engine of the transition, the race to produce them also comes with real risks. Can the shift to clean transport avoid becoming the next driver of deforestation?
Mining for critical minerals like nickel, cobalt, and lithium is expanding rapidly in producing countries. In places like Indonesia, this growth is reshaping landscapes, threatening rainforests, and impacting the lives of indigenous peoples and local communities. Meanwhile, global demand for EV batteries shows no sign of slowing — putting pressure on companies, policymakers, and investors to act decisively.
This session brings together voices from across the battery value chain to explore solutions for a just and sustainable transition.
- Representatives from civil society on the ground will highlight the local impacts of mining.
- Investors will share their perspective on supply chain transparency and financial risk. Industry players will discuss recycling and circularity as part of the solution.
- And policymakers will outline how regulations, including the EU Battery Regulation, can guide Europe toward responsible battery production.
Drawing on the latest research, benchmarks, and scenario analyses, we will examine how the sector can meet growing demand without driving further deforestation. The discussion will explore the roles of disclosure, corporate commitment, investor pressure, inclusion of indigenous peoples and local communities, and recycling as a central pillar of circular battery systems.
The message is clear: electrification must be rapid, but it must also be responsible. This session will show how Europe can lead the transition to electric mobility without leaving a trail of deforestation behind.
